Giving Back in the New Year

new year sparkler

2025 is upon us, and with a new year, comes new years resolutions. Making a plan is one of the best ways to keep resolutions throughout the year. If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration, here are four ways to prioritize giving back in the new year.

  • If your goal is to “volunteer more,” consider designating a day and time to commit to on a weekly or monthly schedule. Volunteering at The Mustard Seed of Central Florida is set up for volunteers to “drop in,” but many volunteers maintain a consistent day and to volunteer. Volunteer hours for The Mustard Seed are 9am-4pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday opportunities. For more information about our volunteer program, click here.
  • If your goal is to “declutter,” there are many methods, books, and ideologies on getting rid of excess. The Mustard Seed was featured in the Orlando Sentinel this past May to discuss how second-hand items can make a difference to families and individuals who have experienced homelessness, personal tragedy, or natural disaster. One way to prioritize decluttering is to designate a box in a specific part of your home, and challenge yourself on a monthly basis to fill the box with items for donation. The Mustard Seed can accept drop off donations year-round, and has a variety of drop off locations in the community specifically for clothing. The Mustard Seed accepts a variety of household items in addition to furniture, from small appliances to books and home décor. A full list of accepted items for donation can be found on our website.
  • If your goal is “giving back,” there are many ways to support nonprofits in 2025. Sharing about a nonprofit on social media ensures that their mission and message is spread to your network. Donating monthly makes a major impact over time. Your company may also offer opportunities for matching gift programs.
  • If your goal is to “thrift more,” you can start by visiting our Seed Boutique, which features clothing, trinkets, toys, and physical media like DVD’s and CD’s. Shopping at The Seed Boutique generates support for The Mustard Seed’s Furniture and Clothing programs. The hours of operation are 9am-3pm, Monday through Friday. To learn more about the Seed Boutique, click here.

The Mustard Seed of Central Florida is the region’s only furniture bank, providing basic household necessities to families and children emerging from crisis. Your support is critical to serving the over 1000 families each year who walk through the doors of our warehouse to receive a full house of furniture. Whether your resolutions center supporting our neighbors in need, personal development and growth, or simply having fun, we wish you success in your goals!
