A Home That Helps Charles Rebuild His Future

When Charles arrived at The Mustard Seed, he was living alone with all of his belongings stored in bags. “I have bags everywhere,” he explained. “Nothing has a place right now.” After working hard to rebuild his life through SSVF, he came hoping to create a space that finally felt stable—and one day, a home his children could return to.

What mattered most to him was finding a dresser. “I needed a dresser where I can organize stuff,” he said. “No one likes living in chaos.” When he spotted a long dresser with deep drawers, he knew immediately it was the piece that would help bring order back into his life.

Choosing his furniture wasn’t just practical—it was grounding. With support from CC, who guided him through the warehouse, Charles felt the process shift from overwhelming to empowering. “She helps you choose,” he said. “It makes everything less daunting.”

When asked what advice he’d give his younger self during the hardest moments of his past, Charles didn’t hesitate: “Reach out to others. I didn’t use the support I had, and it hurt me in the end.” Receiving help from The Mustard Seed is part of his new commitment to rebuilding with community instead of doing it alone.

Charles received essential pieces—including the dresser he hoped for—that will help him create a home, find stability, and work toward reconnecting with the children he loves.
