A Table for Brittney
“I work full time, but I really only make enough to pay rent, lights, and make sure my kids have their necessities.”
Brittney’s situation is like many of our neighbors in Central Florida. Furnishing an apartment is expensive, and sourcing furniture second hand can pose additional challenges. Brittney is a single mother with 4 children. To keep her children off the floor, she’d purchased a queen mattress for them to sleep on, and she herself was sleeping on a borrowed sofa.
32% of families in Orange County fall into an acronym coined by United Way called ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are individuals and families who are working, but living paycheck to paycheck, who don’t have savings, and are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living.
Brittany reached out to The Mustard Seed in need of help furnishing her apartment. In total, Brittney received 41 pieces of furniture for herself and her children. When asked what she was most excited to receive, she said, “A table. We’ll be able to eat at a dinner table as a family.”
