Each client that comes to The Mustard Seed has a unique story and all of them have the same goal, to turn their house into a home. The Mustard Seed aims to help each and every client and to help turn their life around. We are proud to be able to serve our clients. Here are their stories.
Roy, one of our veteran clients, was homeless for 13 years before meeting a fellow veteran who, along with Veterans Affairs, got him out of the woods and into a home, then referred him to The Mustard Seed. Roy is unable to work due to his epilepsy, which is the result of an injury while serving in the Army for 12 years, along with hearing loss. He completed three tours in Korea, along with serving in Operation Desert Storm. When we brought furniture to his new apartment, the bedroom was completely bare except for an alarm clock on the window sill. The sleeping bag Roy used on the linoleum floor had been put away in the closet, in preparation for the furniture he picked out the day before. The living room had only a folding camp chair; the kitchen, only a pot and a small microwave. We provided a kitchen table with four chairs, a couch, easy chair, entertainment center, TV, full mattress and box spring, dresser, nightstand, linens, dishes, books, even a mat for the front door.
“I am a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War. I have been diagnosed with PTSD, major depression, and chronic arthritis. I was incarcerated for 17 years, from 1998 to 2013. I have been in the veteran’s homeless program from August 2013 to August 2015. I now have my own apartment, and I am so grateful to The Mustard Seed’s program to be able to get some furniture and other necessary things to begin my life all over.”
